It’s 1985, and Francesco Dioletta, together with his wife Pina, brings to life the dream of opening a small café. Francesco takes over Bar Duomo, located in Piazza del Duomo in L’Aquila. That same year, he becomes interested in the world of gelato and begins attending various Artisanal Gelato courses. This marks the beginning of his journey, leading to the opening of his first gelateria in Piazza Duomo in L’Aquila — the first of several to follow in the years ahead. Today, Gelaterie Duomo boasts four locations: three in L’Aquila and one in Avezzano.
Over these intense years of production, dedicated research, study, and growing passion, Francesco has become one of Italy’s most respected Master Gelato Makers, earning several awards in the field of artisanal gelato.
Francesco is frequently invited to give talks and consultations around the world, thanks to his creativity, technical skill, and deep knowledge of raw ingredients — an essential element in crafting the unique flavor of his gelato.
In 2019, the prestigious Gambero Rosso guide awarded our gelaterias three Cones of Excellence (the best gelaterias are rated from one to three cones, depending on their level of excellence) — a recognition we have proudly maintained every year since. To this day, we remain the only gelateria in Abruzzo to have earned three cones.
In 2023, Francesco was honored with the prestigious title of Ambassador of Taste by the National Doc Italy Association, a recognition that was renewed in 2024 and 2025.
